Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a disease involving multiple systems, characterized by fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, cardiac damage and shock, accompanied by significantly increased markers of inflammation and myocardial injury. The evidence of severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection or coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exposure history coexisted. The pathogenesis of MIS-C is not clear yet, and it may be related to immune disorders secondary to novel coronavirus infection, which has been reported mostly in European and American countries at present. The clinical manifestations of MIS-C are similar to those of Kawasaki disease, with the main difference being associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among MIS-C patients, 60% require intensive care and most receive anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory-dominant combined therapy, with a fatality rate of 0.9%-2.0%. At present, the global prevention and control of COVID-19 is still facing severe challenge. Pediatricians should improve their ability to identify MIS-C. |
